WHEN YOU’RE NOT ENOUGH

When you’re not enough
…it’s tough
When you’re not enough
…it’s rough
When you’re not enough
…you’re like a floating ghost
…living with a mean host
Mama
…why was I not enough?

II
The heavens above can attest to the love
…I have for you
The earth beneath can smell the peace I’ve always wanted
…for you
Even the air I breath seeps to beep my prayers
…always for you
But fate did slate some hate to bait our state
And the then young heart did heat to wish your state
…in the better
Why did you not see?

III
The elders saying
…the second must follow the footsteps of the first
Is relative
…if you analyze in your stance
How could I be a she who lived for her
…to kill my me?
How could I live like one whose plans was written
…for the eastern road of God
When my western path called for me?
How could I be another
…to please you
…when my heart knew what it needed too?
Mama
…why was I not enough?

IV
Why couldn’t you see rebellion
…as the lion which stole my Zion
…to iron out my hurts
…for your eyes to see
…and your arms to hug
…for my healing?
Why couldn’t you hear the save-me calls
…through my falls in your hall
…to build a wall in my tender sheltering?
Why did you want a fish to fly
…igmoring its swift swims in soaring waters?
Mama
Why was I not enough?

V
Time did steal our bond beyond our thoughts
And no high dime can wheel us back
But my prayers build layers of wellness
…in the heavens
My wishes light hopes for your peace and safety
My love talks trust of your fulfillment
…even through your difficulty
Because life has blown its air to show
…that fate blooms all in their own sands
Let love lead us into forgetting
…that which heavily weighed on us
So our presence will fruitfully bear a history
…to cherish

Just a simple Ghanaian trying to find the best in our society. I may be fun, I may be interesting, I may be funny, I may even be foolish or intelligent, but it is all based on the mood in which you find yourself. I believe our minds make us who we are. Know that, pain, no matter its 'unbearability', is transient. Unburden or delight yourself for a while in my writings please. And all corrections, advice and opinions are welcome. Know that you are the king, queen or royal on this blog. :)

What a heartbreaking yet hope-filled poem! I relate so much to your description. How painful and promising (in a strange way) that the older we get the more we appreciate our mothers. Especially those who tried to shape us into their image for us. I hope you have a wonderful day! 🙂
