Akorkor always fantasized about her wedding
Wanting it exciting
Wanting it romantic
Wishing it big with a cake gigantic
But now Corono pushes her on her knees with need
…to shrink it into a social distance party of twenty five
II
Coming from a big family
Where her mother’s family tree in close proximity
…can boast of over four hundred people
And her father’s can boast of over six hundred people
With uncountable friends and colleagues
She dreamt of at least two thousand people at her nuptials
Now she faces only 25
God knows how she can choose them from the lot
III
Aunt Dede has made it clear she must attend
…with her eight children
Papa Nii has stressed emphatically
…he must be there with his 14 children
Aunt Nadei has made it clear
…she must attend with her husband
Her six sisters and two brothers have shot arrows of
…don’t – you-dare-eliminate-us with their eyes
Her numerous cousins keep on calling non stop
And her husband’s family are also cuing on his cellphone
…manipulating words to get them tickets to their wedding
Who comes, who does not?
Akorkor curses Corona!
IV
She too wants to postpone the wedding
But there is a seed germinating in her farm
And shooting to tell tales of a known abomination
One she and her husband are determined to parcel
…with matrimony to swerve the punishment of their church
But the hurdle of drawing a guest list
Is now a mountain unclimbable
Thanks to the deadly Corona!
V
So she walks and talks
…about inconsequential things
Knowing she will lose friends and incur the wrath of family members
She shouts and weeps
Knowing her dreams have been reduced to screams
But nothing can be done to salvage the situation
Damn Corona!
VI
She still paces as her heart races
Dreading the fast racing weeks of two she’ll say yay
…to her husband
And nay to the many good hearts
…hoping to share in her joy
