A SHAME

We both felt the flames of attraction
And watched as our hearts held hands
…walked happily out and about
…kissed and drank fresh nsafufuo
…joked and laughed
And came back into their shameful enclaves
Watching us languish in yearning
…without doing a thing

II
You were not willing to take a step
And certainly, I couldn’t have been the willing party
For you know patriarchy locked its anarchy on my mind,
…no matter how far I’ve strayed from its village,
And hanged the keys in the bosom of shame
As an Ɔkaniba
…how could I have visited the caves of shame
…in my bid to have you?
Petty and childish definition might have fitted me then
Excuse my flaw, even wood leaves its ashes after a thorough burn

III
Years walked, looked and laughed
…at our ridiculousness
As our eyes made us out even in multitudes
Our ears heard our breaths even in chaos
Our noses made out our scents even in multi-fragrances
And woke goosebumps on our skin
Still, our emotions braked in our throats
Never making it past the fences of our lips
Still not moving
Cupid branded us stupid and chose a humid day
…to severe our ties
The debris must have fallen on you
As you watched me stand
…walk and fly

IV
Wherever your boldness traveled to
…and returned from
I know not
But I have passed the station of our bonding
And prefer being a loner than holding your hand
I don’t know what washed you from my needs
But it did wash you clean

V
So leave it be
And pray our paths cross in another world
So we can rectify this mistake
For who knows
Our roles may switch
And I may end up the bewitched
This world is far spent
…our feelings too burnt to be salvaged
So let us fall
…into the abyss of what could have been
…to search for the well hidden hole of forgetfulness
