BEAUTIFUL

When all do talk

About complexions

And call mine dirty

And call mine animalish,

***

When all do talk

Like holes without breaks

About my status

And call me low

And call me un-classy,

***

When all do talk

Like fowls sensing danger

And call me a taboo

And call me cursed;

***

I look at me,

The royal me

The velvet black me

In the bright rivers

By the help of the sun

And see one God baked,

And see one like all

And see one so clear

Then I see one of the angels

No, one like God

A beautiful one like God

Yes, beautiful is how I see me

Like an akuaba

I see none other but me

And my head’s thoughts speak best

I am beautiful!

Just a simple Ghanaian trying to find the best in our society. I may be fun, I may be interesting, I may be funny, I may even be foolish or intelligent, but it is all based on the mood in which you find yourself. I believe our minds make us who we are. Know that, pain, no matter its 'unbearability', is transient. Unburden or delight yourself for a while in my writings please. And all corrections, advice and opinions are welcome. Know that you are the king, queen or royal on this blog. :)

When I was young I was made fun of and laughed at because of my dark skin. Sadly it was mostly other Black people who did this. I thought myself ugly for years. I used to come home crying to my Father. My Dad used to tell me this, “The Blacker the Berry the Sweeter the Juice. If the berry is too light it has not use.” Now that I’m much older I’m glad to be dark skinned because I don’t look my age. Truly as the expression goes, “Black don’t crack!”
