Africa is not a bush
It is also no country
There aren’t people living on trees
Houses, mansions, great architecture
And great minds are found in Africa
Which including its Island Nations
Are 54 countries in all
Africa is a continent
Like Asian Continent
And the European continent
And not a country
So one can be a Ghanaian
Who knows only about Ghana
And has never travelled across the continent
We are not the same
We have our differences
Just as other continents do
Africa is a continent
And not a country
All those who mistake the problems
Of one with the other
Must bow their heads in shame
For illiteracy is really a shameful disease
Go to the doctor of books and be cured
Africa is not a country
But a continent
Our traits are different
Our languages different
Our tones are different
Our lives so different
Our cultures are different
Our geographical locations so different
Although most of us have the priceless black skin
Just go straight to the books
And learn what needs be
Be blinded not by racism
And labelling
Africa is a continent
And not a country
Let those who think themselves schooled
Go and be schooled again

I felt like a schoolgirl when reading this post. I can just imagine you one hand on the hip and the other hand with a finger moving up and down, and you sternly saying, “Let me tutor you about Africa”. Great post! May I be excused, please? 🙂

Hello fellow! Thank you very much for coming around. I know we have to take some to school in order to have them know it is a continent and not a country.

It’s sad that Africa is sometimes portrayed as one place, one culture, when in fact, it is a rich tapestry of different cultures, languages, and people. Wonderful post, Cecelia. 🙂

Thank you Rob. And the people who are supposed to know do the portrayal. Sometimes I shiver when I try to get into their schooled thoughts. But what do we do, we just have to keep reminding them to turn to their books.

True… Many forget

And many do not know. Imagine CNN talking about banning all flights from Africa because of Ebola when Ebola is only in a few countries in Africa.

Well, I often see a lot of rubbish coming from India as well.

I think all these media houses should get reps from all the continents of the world who are well vexed and familiar with their environment. Then they can be free of these serious blunders and save their faces from the land of ignoramuses.

True. I must confess to being quite ignorant of The African continent. It has, from what little I know, had a tumultuous history

It has. But there are 54 countries and even within countries, there are several cultures with several languages. Ghana has so many languages, over 40 but I speak only 2 of the lot and struggle with one. There are so many cultures that you may fail a course on Ghanaian culture if you do it in two semesters. That is how dense it is.

Ghana has 40 languages? Seriously? Wow… In india, we have 20 odd distinct languages. We do have a few thousand dialects, though. This is fascinating

It is. I think there are 42 languages if I am not mistaken. People just see Africa and not different people with different cultures. Rajiv, unless you read well about people, you will never know and not knowing, one must just shut up in order not to be an ignoramus.
