We watch Nigerian and Ghanaian movies and the appetite of the gods soaring with every bad deed. We love watching the humour at play. There was the dubious factor of the one who filmed the sex act, the mistake factor of the women who allowed themselves to be filmed and now we are faced with the ridiculous factor of elders wanting to take advantage of the situation to acquire things and implement archaic norms which will make Ghana a laughing stock.
I have always thought that that particular issue of the gods developing human appetite for goats, cows and money and wishing to be entertained with the beatings of culprits is something of the past. With recent comments supposedly coming from a palace in Tamale concerning the sex scandal, I am afraid these movie scenes are gaining reality in my mind.
This is something that happened in 2008/2009, even if some are recent as some say, the gods and custodians slept in shame while it took place. Years on, the whole world get evidence of it happening while the gods slept and the custodians get up to say they are charging the victims and the supposed culprit some cows and goats, publicly beat the man and banish the women. I am at a loss. Is this the part where I say I am flabbergasted? If a security man sleeps on the job and something is stolen for years without the knowledge of the owners and the security man, can there be a time when the thief is apprehended when seen with the stolen item? Wouldn’t it mean the security man and the owners did not do their jobs? With this shame, will they still have mouths to talk let alone demand for justice?
If they do then then they have no shame. What happened to “If a child defecates on your laps it is washed and not cut off”?
With the collection of these items and the supposed banishment of the victims, will it erase the pictures from the internet or cancel their names from the land of birth? We are no longer in the colonial era where people cannot afford to live in other lands. To erase this shame, I think the gods in the form of humans asking for things should quietly sleep. If they are worried we will talk of their potency, they should rest assured we won’t. The case of defensiveness being the best form of combating an attack will not apply here. Nothing they do now can reverse the scandal, it has not affected the land in any way, maybe in name but it will pass. Children who are forced into marriages abound, some cases can be branded defilement but all that are seen as normal while carelessly having sex and filming going viral is considered a great taboo.
Many abhorable things take place daily worldwide but no teeth of any land has threatened to chew goats and cows. If they had seen it on the spot, they would have rightfully deserved the fat cows they crave.
Even if I am banished from here, I will still maintain my stance. This is uncalled for. All eyes are now on Ghana when we mention sex scandal, let us lie low.
