My salary is 400 cedis a month. I used to pay four Ghana cedis to and from work every day, but now I pay ten cedis on a normal day, and fifteen cedis on a busy day when troskis decide to ply through short distances. Yes, they will say from Number 5 to Abeka, then begin loading from Abeka to Circle. I can’t walk too, lateness makes my bosses livid.
I started eating once a day to keep up, but I think it’s time to let go, because I can’t afford a once-a-day meal for a full month, knowing even “gɔbɛ”; my favorite gari and beans, costs 12 cedis in the minimum.
Don’t ask me about the cause, you know the cedi depreciation is the cause. As to whether it was caused by Covid and the Russian-Ukraine War remains to be seen. From corrupt politicians to greedy market women, whoever started this also lives within. The painful thing is, they might have more than enough to get by, which is so unfair! I don’t and I’m getting suffocated by the state of the economy.
