WOMAN IN HOLES

I was born beautiful

With an added original for a purpose

Man thought they were not enough

There was the mouth

Ears, nose and you know what

But my ears got an earthly

Why must you tamper with

My original earth path of the mighties?

Cries of the land for me were ignored

Cries of the creator in deep rains

Were ignored, even the land so close

Had voice unheard, how will the heavens be heard?

They cited faithfulness

Then culture

The things a woman must see

Pain, pain, pain until pain is taken by the earth

Amoafowaa Sefa Cecilia (c) 2014

I wrote this piece to tell all those who suffered and are still suffering under the barbaric Female Genital Mutilation that we shall rise, we are fighting to free their minds and protect their young ones. God should give them peace from now till they depart home.

Just a simple Ghanaian trying to find the best in our society. I may be fun, I may be interesting, I may be funny, I may even be foolish or intelligent, but it is all based on the mood in which you find yourself. I believe our minds make us who we are. Know that, pain, no matter its 'unbearability', is transient. Unburden or delight yourself for a while in my writings please. And all corrections, advice and opinions are welcome. Know that you are the king, queen or royal on this blog. :)

I learned of this barbaric practice several years ago in my undergraduate studies and was sickened to my core. It is the epitome violence against women and has no place in this world. I was so enraged when I saw a video of a group of young girls in a village being lined up on the ground while a man cut out their clitoris with a dirty piece of glass. Their legs were then tied together and they were left there in a row waiting to heal or bleed to death. If they survived that then they would have to survive infection. The violence did not end there, no, when the girl became of marrying age she would need to be cut or torn open in order for her to have sexual intercourse with her husband. The images and thoughts of this horrific event enrages me and I feel all men who continue to perpetrate this crime upon these beautiful innocent girls should be mutilated themselves. This evil has been perpetrated for generations and one of the worst things is that they have convinced the women that it makes them more attractive. I understand that this is a cultural practice and I have no right to criticize it but everything in me revolts against this horrible monstrous act. I apologize if my comments are culturally insensitive. I cannot tolerate violence against children and or women in any fashion.

Thank you very much Tina. This is exactly how I feel about that aspect of their culture. It is most horrific but they see nothing wrong with it. As you said, the mothers of the girls or ladies defend this horrible act so it is difficult to curb it. My heart breaks into pieces every time I hear of such practices in my homeland especially if the ladies involved lose their lives.

You know, I must have learned about this practice well over 20 years ago and my stomach is still churning and my heart is a fire with fury. These poor girls. I have to wonder where it all started. Who was the one to decide that butchering women was a good idea? I would not want this barbarism to happen to an animal but the very thought of it being performed upon innocent young girls is nauseating.

According to what I’ve been told, a man went to war and his wife cheated on him. Many of this issues came up and the men decided the clitoris was the part which made women yearn for sex. By cutting it, they were supposed to be faithful. Ridiculous, isn’t it? Sometimes, I feel like getting out of this hell hole called Africa, so much freedom and so much restrictions and barbarisms if you are a woman.

I understand. I have felt the same way many times as when you are fighting everyone, including those you are trying to help, it wears out your entire being. Its like trying to bale out a sinking boat with a gaping hole allowing the ocean to rush in. You have my prayers dear Cecelia. The task you have chosen is not easy but it is very much needed.

I am so happy to know that my words bring you peace. When the forces who would destroy all the light this creation has to offer it is good to know we are not alone in our fight. There are barbaric practices in every culture on every continent, for if humankind inhabits the land then it is tainted. “Advanced” cultures try to convince the world they are better by shinning the light on horrors perpetrated on other shores but there are vile things within each society. Some just hide it better than others can but make no mistake injustices and monstrous behavior happens everywhere; therefore, we must not become discouraged and give up the fight. Be well Cecelia and always remember that you are appreciated and you are never alone! Be certain to care well for yourself.

Your words are powerful, and this act of barbarism is deplorable. When will the new enlightenment occur? It seems that the world is such a barbaric place.
