They needed the inedible sardine
But not the working fish
They sat and watched It struggling
When It was of their flesh
And never thought of helping
When It finally bobbed up bellywise in a breathless wave
They hired an expensive can
To transport it to the keeper freezer
To keep it fresh for weeks
So they can turn it into a delicious sardine
For the earth
How sad!
All those who mouthed having nothing
Appear with something
Oh how I wish they, like the ant
Will think by placing themselves in its shoes
I thought life had rightfully taken
Being as you called with burning drinks
I am so sorry you’re in the cold
I now see how unfair you were treated
And I feel the guilt
But you have taught me a lesson
A lesson of the seeker of womb ties
A sardine for the earth!
Adious my lovable uncle
Never will any sailing breath
Make me feel this bad and guilty
For wherever I am, I’ll fly if need be
To make sure there’s a ready hand
It is sad how I had to learn my lesson the hard way.

This is for my uncle who died on the 5th of August 2014 when I was far away. The people who called a few days earlier for money for the hospital actually had money to preserve the corpse and prepare a lavish funeral. I used to hear families love the dead not the living but I paid no attention. I have actually learnt my lesson the sad way. May your gentle soul rest in perfect peace, Uncle Kwabena Boateng.
