Besides the rotten before fruition
And the pecked before harvesting
Some maize are roasted immediately after their harvest
…never to taste the smell of a home
…talk less see their barn
Ib
Some are sent straight into the saucepan
Boiled and eaten
Some also taste the sun
And dry
Only to be milled into dough
Some are also nursed
Their hopes up
Only to be squashed and used as asaana
Some, in their last stages to reach plantation
Are attacked by weevils
Still some are able to go through plantation
II
Plantation is not the winning stage
As the maize seed will have to rot
…in order to bloom
And weather storms
…luck through pests
…and strays
Such are the lives of humans
We’re born to journey together
Only to meet our fates in dynamic ways
Till the last grain of a generation falls like ash
Into the gluttonous earth
To nourish the new generation
…in an unending cycle
