AT THE SHORE (Corona Series, Episode 3)

Dromo woke up at dawn, sneaked through the path behind his house and made his way to the shore. With the security services parading the area, it had been difficult for him to ease himself. Chorkor is known for its housing without toilet facilities. This is because settlers who are mainly fishermen and fishmongers think defecation feeds the fishes fat. And so there’s been no shame in easing one’s self on the shore for sea waves to come carry into the sea.
The first few days of the lock down shocked them. They’d had situations where some government people have come to talk to them to desist from defeating at the sea shore. But they’d always laughed it off. They attended such meetings because the people came with item 13. Some fried rice and chicken, sometimes with Coca-Cola and Fanta. Listening to nonsense and being fed after was a cool deal. There had also been the journalists who tried to catch them on camera. They didn’t care because to them, they were doing nothing wrong. Sometimes they spoke to them and saw themselves on television. But the soldiers first caught Nii Kwadey and whipped him like a naughty school boy just for attending to nature’s call at the shore. When he came to tell the story, no one believed him. So Adotey also went, was caught and beaten like a petty thief. Shortly after, Amoko came crying. She had received slaps she never knew existed. So Nii Nortey asked are they to protect us from getting diseases or prevent us from shitting? Don’t they shit too? Nii mustered courage and went to ask one of the soldiers. Because of his old age, they told him they were supposed to go to the public toilet which was over 15 minutes walk from their side.
Nii came back and told them the soldiers were mad. They did not know nature’s call knows no patience let alone wait for minutes before falling from anuses sometimes. So he advised them to wake up early and go do their business at the shore. When Dromo reached the shore at 4am yesterday, there were over twelve people there for the same business. Some were smoking and others were holding small torches. Before they knew what was happening and Dromo could force to push something down, people’s newspapers were flying in the sky as they took to their heels, their trousers and pants left behind. Dromo threw himself into the sea and began to swim but was caught before he could dive deeper.
He went numb as the blows landed on his face. He opened his eyes, looked keenly through the blows to see Bortey. So he asked why he was beating him.
Why won’t I? So you’ve food to eat and enjoy when you owe me huge sums of money? Your mother’s vag**na did not tell your father’s pen*s to f**k out my money and bring it to me you toolobeefi?
Dromo was at sea, literally and metaphorically. But I don’t have the money. If I had the money… Bortey cut him short
“Stop your lies. Have you seen a person who doesn’t eat, shitting before? In your whole life, have you seen such a thing before? He fumed.
Dromo didn’t know what to say. Slaps upon blows and he realized he could die from this. So he started shouting. Many soldiers run towards them. Bortey began to run but he was given a hot chase. One soldier asked Dromo what was happening, all he could say was Hmmm lock down wahala o. The soldier looked down at him and realized he was naked waist down. He bursts out laughing but Dromo could not laugh. He was thinking about what Bortey said. No wonder he had pushed and pushed without success. It finally dawned on him that it is food which turns into what feeds their fishes. Funny those big fishes too feed the big men in the society. He thought and joined in the laughter, flinching at the fresh sores on his mouth. In his head, he did fail in his night business.

Just a simple Ghanaian trying to find the best in our society. I may be fun, I may be interesting, I may be funny, I may even be foolish or intelligent, but it is all based on the mood in which you find yourself. I believe our minds make us who we are. Know that, pain, no matter its 'unbearability', is transient. Unburden or delight yourself for a while in my writings please. And all corrections, advice and opinions are welcome. Know that you are the king, queen or royal on this blog. :)
